One of the things that helps make an environment like this functional is student ownership. I work to make sure all of the learners are very clear about why we are doing the things we are doing and their role in it. Additionally, they have a key role in the operation of the class. I don’t even create the course syllabus anymore. We write it together the first week of school. Two years ago, I changed my grading to be based on a 4-point rubric in most cases. My students helped me come up with the way that translates to our 100-point grade scale. This kind of collaboration makes a very fluid and learning focused environment a place I call home. Our program’s “Manifesto” sums up this kind of commitment to each other. We created it with our learners to put into words the way we all believe our program should operate.
