STEM Experiences
I would rather give my learners experiences instead of activities. It is not about me keeping them busy. That is what activities are for. Instead, I prefer experiences. When my learners are involved in an experience, I focus on the standards, but more importantly, the learning. I am more concerned with what they learn and experience than what I teach them.
This quote from Richard Paul in his book, Critical Thinking: What Every Person Needs To Survive in a Rapidly Changing World. sums up why I feel experiences are better for learners.
"These two characteristics, then, accelerating change and increasing complexity — with their incessant demand for a new capacity to adapt, for the now rare ability to think effectively through new problems and situations in new ways — sound the death knell for traditional methods of learning how to survive in the world in which we live. How can we adapt to reality when reality won’t give us time to master it before it changes itself, again and again, in ways we cannot anticipate? As we struggle to gain insight, let’s look more closely at the operating forces."

Numbers Design Templates
These are some of the templates my learners are using in class to help manage their design process and activities. Feel free to use them, change them up. Most importantly, please share any ideas or suggestions.
This design process guide was one of our first, and the most bare bones.

This experience is based on the cited conference proceeding:

Ice Cold SodaThis is the Heat Transfer lab we like to do with keeping a soda cold for an hour. The learners are limited to using only materials that "recycled" from their house. The materials must already be in their house. They cannot buy things to use. Also, the device cannot use anything that is commonly used as an insulator, such as a koozie or styrofoam.

"Indy Car" RacerI like doing the Indy Car Racer project on the first couple of days of the year. Learners build a small version of a soap box race car using notecards, tape, and straws or toothpick. The challenge puts learners on teams and gives me a lot of great conversation points to use all year long. The project is fully outlined in the linked iBook below

Graphing with SpheroI asked a couple of my students to quickly show a progression of math equations using Sphero. I tossed this challenge to them at the end of the school day and had to leave for a meeting. I needed the video for a presentation the next day. The came up with this in about 30 minutes.
For math teachers, this should give you an idea of how you can use this in your class. Students can do more than just graph things out, they have to really think about how they are doing this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XUCaWVB7W0&feature=youtu.be |
