Prompt 2: Which of the nine elements of digital citizenship are particularly important to you and your class, school, or district? Why? How might you address them in practical terms?
Relationships is the main focus of our campus. Falling in line with that are the fifth and seventh elements of digital citizenship (Ribble, 2015). Both of these relate to our relationships with each other. Digital etiquette is no less important than how we treat each other in the physical world. In fact, those two are very related to each other. It is important that our learners see both those aspects of life, digital and physical, as both important and that it is equally important to treat each other with respect and integrity. Digital rights and responsibilities follow that same theme. Relationships are not just about the people in our near vicinity. We are striving to teach our learners to have positive relationships with everyone they interact with, even digitally. Respecting the rights of others and being responsible in our actions goes hand-in-hand with that. I guess that I am a bit strange. I have taught that the way we act in the digital realm is just a part of our day to day life. It is just as important to be informed about the digital world as the physical. I am glad to see that my school is starting to do the same. It never sat right with me that the digital aspects of citizenship were relegated to just technology labs. Technology is a part of the fabric of daily life and the rights, responsibilities, and etiquette is something that everyone is responsible for every day. We expect learners to read in every class, not just ELA. We talk about treating other physical human beings fairly in every class. The way we treat others online is just as important. Making these digital aspects a foundation part of our day will go a long way to improving the situations both online and in the physical world. References Ribble, M. (2015).
