Sir Ken Robinson’s Ted talk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1208&v=r9LelXa3U_I) brings to mind a keynote address I saw given by Alan Bean several years ago. Alan Bean was on the crew of the Apollo 12 and the 4th person to walk on the moon. During the address, he said that if we look up to the stars, we can tell exactly where each star will be tomorrow, next year, even the next millennium. They are predictable and we already know what will happen. But for every person, we don’t know where they will be five years from now. We can’t even say with certainty where they will be next year. That chapter hasn’t been written. All of their experiences and the events of their lives will shape their future and make it unique.
The same goes for students. We can’t say where they will be next year. All we can say for certain is where they are right now. Given the great opportunity we have to leverage technology for each of them and then use our own talents as teachers to help guide, that future can be unimaginable. Unless we keep doing what we did in the past which is treat them all alike and pre-select their future for them. |
