For these reasons, I’ve decided to be very intentional about how I go about rolling out my project. I’m starting with a couple key players who are opinion leaders on the campus and already open to the idea. Instead of this being another initiative, I’m starting as a one-on-one, peer-to-peer idea. Both books, crucial conversations and differentiated leadership, are going to be instrumental in keeping this project as a positive move for student learning. Conversations are not centering on computational thinking, but instead on getting learners to be better problem solvers. Most of our programs and teachers on campus talk about how the want to build problem-solving skills and students. At the same time very few of them specifically teach those skills and then assess the outcome. The head won’t go where the heart hasn’t been. One thing I have in my favor is that our teachers really do believe that our learners need to be good problem solvers. These books are giving me the tools to help make that a reality.
