One of the team leads I’m working with at school is having trouble with this exact situation. Unfortunately, she so caught up in checking things off her list that she can’t see the problem in front of her. The team is made up of several singleton teachers who are all in different areas but, more or less, have “related” content. To school has every team working on common assessments. This team is having difficulty with it because they don’t have a “why”. It will take some time for the team to come up with a common why and a common understanding. It would be a well spent delay, but not one she is willing to take.
I won’t give up. I’ll keep working and coaching. I know that one day we will both get there. In her classroom, things are different. In there, she leads with her heart. She builds relationships and works toward helping students understand why they are learning the things they are learning. It is an interesting situation. One that I tread lightly. I’ve tried to have the conversation on understanding the why for the team. Currently, she thinks she has done that. I get to practice my Crucial Conversation skills…
