The images above show my initial post and some of the responses from my learners recently. For the last few weeks, I have been simply taking things at face value if they give me some type of response. I am not looking for a perfect self-reflection and defense. I am only looking for a response. As I tell all of my learners, "I don't know what you know and think until you tell me." I don't know what they understand or where they have difficulties until they take the risk and turn things in.
Several things have now happened. First, they are more comfortable with the concept of self-reflection. Next, they feel safe that I am not holding things against them. I want their genuine feelings. In addition, I know exactly where each student is in relation to both the content and the concept of self-reflection. Let me tell you, I am excited. Last week, I added a dimension. They create documentation of how their work in class helps toward the completion of their project. This documentation does not tie at all to the standards. It is about them working on the project for class. Next week, I am planning to start having discussions of improving the self-reflections. Many students have already started adding documentation to their self-reflections even though all I asked for was just a statement to defend it. My goal is that, by the end of the year, they are being very honest with themselves. This work will be going into their portfolios, helping to show their growth and ability to learn. It's a process. Learning is messy and this shows it.
