My students have been working at that. We did a reflection at the end of the week. The class came to a consensus on one standard that everyone worked on that week. Each student told me the score they thought should go in the grade book for them. They also had to defend it. The expectation was that they gave me more than, "because I worked hard." Give me concrete examples to support your grade.
I was so happy that everyone did it. No, they didn't all give me the grade I would have given them. Some were higher. Some were lower. But, they all gave a reasonable and valid defense of their self-assessment. They weren't great, but they were honest. This was their first time doing this. They have to start somewhere. I am excited about what the future brings. All of my students are very aware of the standards they have to demonstrate mastery of. They are also clearly aware of the challenges they have to solve this year. They can hit a target that is clear and doesn't move.
